Chapter 10

Doctor Rains suddenly noticed that he now was underground. A second ago he was still walking with his scary companion through the strange jungle, and now, it appeared, he was in a large dark cave, lit only by blue lights on Astor’s armor and a similar dim glow somewhere far ahead.

Marshal Dormagar invaded Anzurog’s bridge like an angry firestorm, complete with chunks of burning brimstone and a meteor shower. He was followed by soldiers of his Array, a personal guard hand-picked from the Dust Devils. The soldiers of the Imperial airborne force quickly took positions around the chamber, much like they’d do if this was a takeover, but they were wearing ceremonial light armor in traditional silver and sky-blue, decorated with insignias of the Hurricane Fleet and their Marshal’s family crests, armed with ritual long sabers held ready under long blue robes of woven Enkarian armorsilk. A bush on a small tree-covered hill in the middle of a jungle moved slightly to see if anyone would pay attention. Nothing happened. The bush moved again. The surrounding trees only responded with careless yawning, incited by a warm breeze that came from the ocean. In its final movement the bush revealed its prime mover – a five-fingered right hand in an armored glove of a gamma-type resilient molybdenum-titanium superalloy. The hand pushed the bush aside, partially revealing a kneeling figure behind it. The figure’s head in a large spherical helmet slowly moved from side to side, as if trying to sight something, although the helmet was apparently devoid of any optical sensors. Armored obverse of a visor, located where a normal humanoid would have eyes, was purely metallic, making the figure look effectively blind. The protruding mask of the helmet, which looked like some sort of a short animal snout, was making barely noticeable whooshing noises, indicating some sort of breathing. The figure raised its left hand with extended index and middle fingers, and waved it forward twice.
